The short version
- 1Ask for a written plan with each procedure itemized.
- 2Ask which items are urgent and which can wait.
- 3Ask your insurer for a pre-treatment estimate where available.
What is on the plan
Expect a list of teeth, procedures, and fees. Each procedure usually has a standard code (a “CDT code”) that offices and insurers use. You can ask what each code means in plain words.
Urgent, soon, and watch
Not everything on a plan has the same priority. Ask the dentist to mark what must be done first (pain, infection, a failing tooth), what is wise to do soon, and what can be watched.
Phasing the work
Splitting treatment into phases can spread cost over time, and may let you use insurance benefits across two benefit years. It is only sensible if the dentist agrees the timing is safe.
Get the numbers clear
- What is the full fee for each step?
- What will my plan pay, and what will I owe?
- Are there payment plans or a prepay discount?
- Would you mind if I got a second opinion?
