Gum health 101

bleeding, swelling and what to do about it

Bleeding when you brush is common. It is also a signal worth reading.

The short version

  1. 1Bleeding is often a sign of inflamed gums, not of brushing too much.
  2. 2Daily cleaning between teeth is the single biggest gum habit.
  3. 3See a dentist if gums stay swollen, bleed for more than two weeks, or teeth feel loose.

What bleeding usually means

Plaque left along the gumline irritates the gums, and irritated gums bleed easily. That early stage is called gingivitis. It is common and often reversible.

What helps

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes, angling the bristles at the gumline.
  • Clean between teeth every day.
  • Keep going through the first week or two. Bleeding often fades as gums calm down.
  • Do not smoke or vape.

When it is more than gingivitis

Gums that pull back, bad breath that will not go away, pus, or teeth that feel loose can point to periodontitis, a deeper infection. It needs a dentist’s attention and a longer-term plan.

Other things that affect gums

Pregnancy, diabetes, some medicines, stress and teeth grinding can all play a part. Mention changes to your dentist.
